Sophisticated micro- and nano-sensors are part of many aspects of 21st century technologies, including medicine, health care, environmental protection, security, automotive applications, navigation and many more. Turning sensory signals from electrochemical, bio-electrochemical, gas-sensing and solid-state detectors into defined electrical signals that can be interpreted and acted upon by both stationary and portable equipment are therefore main activities of this unit at the IAF.

We develop integrated micro and nano-sensors using novel wide bandgap semiconductors such as:

  • Diamond,
  • group III-nitrides (GaN, InN, AlN, and their alloys),
  • In2O3, SnO2, ZnO, Ga2O3

which show exceptional properties with respect to sensitivity, stability, hardness, transparency, biocompatibility and miniaturization. Dependent on specific requirements we implement nanowires, nano metal-oxide particles, ultra nano- and ultra micro-electrode arrays, field effect transistor devices and mim-structures for optimized sensing.
