The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is a leading science and technology center in the field of micro- and nano-structured compound semiconductors and devices made of synthetic diamond. The research and development is focused on micro- and opto-electronic circuits, modules and systems for applications in safety, security and communication systems as well as for medical applications and environmental protection.

The institute features a cutting-edge semiconductor process line thus being able to provide leading edge devices, circuits and modules with highest functionalities as prototypes or in small quantities.

The R&D work carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF follows our “5 times S Strategy”:

  1. Safety and environmental protection,
  2. Security of life and quality of life,
  3. Saving of electrical energy,
  4. Services for communication technologies
  5. Stimulation of innovative products and jobs

Our national and international partners in research and technology are the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), national state governments, the European Commission, and industrial enterprises.

The Institute was founded in 1957 and now has a total staff of 220 scientists, engineers and technicians. Our annual budget amounts to 24 million €.

The IAF is one of the 59 research institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and is member of the Fraunhofer Alliance for Microelectronics (VµE) and the Fraunhofer Alliance for Defense and Security Research (VVS).
